3 Tips to Master the New York Esthetician Licensing Exam

If you’re a New Yorker looking to become an esthetician, then you’ll need to take the proper exams to get licensed. After you’ve completed a minimum of 600 hours of esthetics training at a licensed institution, you’re eligible to take the esthetician licensing exams in New York state, which include both a written test and a practical exam.
Whether you’re a soon-to-be graduate looking for advice or if this is your first time thinking about becoming an esthetician, we want to give you some tips that will help you prepare for both of these exams and for your future career as an esthetician.
1. Practice the Material You’ll See on the Esthetician Licensing Exam at Home and in School
In the weeks leading up to the examination, we have our students take “practice tests” multiple times to make sure they’re ready for the exam on the actual day. This involves treating the classroom like the exam itself and running you through the kinds of procedures you’d be asked to know.
But this doesn’t have to stay in the classroom. Practicing at home on a mannequin or even on friends/family members gives you extra time to perfect your skills and techniques. Plus, our students get a perk for practicing at home! Education Director Jay Christmas points out that “when you are a new Atelier student, you receive a new mannequin head to practice your skills so you can continue learning and training at home on your own time.”
2. Follow a Detailed Study Guide for the Written Exam
When it comes to the written part of the examination, it’s crucial to know the kinds of information you’ll be tested on. Take thorough notes during your classes and reread those as you’re getting ready for the test. Also, look at previous exams you had during your time in school, and make sure you’ve learned the correct answers to questions you might’ve missed before.
At Atelier Esthetique, we prepare our students with an in-depth study guide for the exam, including details about knowing skin conditions, safely using equipment, how to treat a patient, and so much more.
3. Set Yourself Up for Success the Night Before the Tests
Taking any test can be nerve-racking, but properly managing your time and stress can be a great way to prevent issues. Lead Instructor Kyra Svetlovsky provides great advice for any exam: “It’s important to get a good’s nice sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and don’t panic. It’s normal to be nervous.”
For the practical exam, instructor Ann Sidmonidze gives one crucial piece of advice: “make sure your bag is organized and properly packed. If you know the layout of your bag, you can grab anything you need at a moment’s notice. Everything else, you’ll already be prepared for.”
