How to Go to School While Working Full-Time

At our most recent open house here at Atelier Esthetique Institute, Michelle, a future student, asked a question we hear often:

“How can I go to school while still keeping my full-time job?”

Michelle wants to train for a career in esthetics but doesn’t want to leave the 9-to-5 job that she currently has. Balancing a full-time job and education is challenging, especially when you know a new career path is waiting on the other side of your schooling. But, it’s achievable with the right strategies. We told Michelle the three tips on how to go to school while managing a full-time job.

Find a Schedule That Works for You

The first thing we explained to Michelle was that going to school is a commitment, but there are ways to balance school with work. Balancing a full-time job with education requires careful planning. Yet, many of our students work full-time while pursuing their education. We offer multiple types of schedules for our students to find the program they need. Michelle works from 9 am until 5 pm every weekday, so we recommended that she look into our weekend or evening programs, which will allow her to go to work and still get her education.

Flexible School Options for Full-Time Workers

At Atelier Esthetique, we pride ourselves on being flexible with our scheduling. We also know that sometimes things happen, and you might get caught off-guard by work and other issues; because of that, we also offer make-up hours to overcome those obstacles.

Communicate with Your Deans and Instructors

Our faculty and staff want to help you succeed. For example, when students miss multiple classes in a row, there is usually a good reason. That said, we can’t help if you don’t tell us the problem. For someone like Michelle, who works full-time, we encourage our students to let us know their situation so that we can provide the support needed.

Communication is key in any professional environment. If you are going to occasionally be five minutes late because of your work schedule, we will understand. But if you don’t tell us the situation, you might face consequences of repeated lateness, and your education will suffer. In other words, help us help you.

Balancing Work, School, and Life: Avoiding Burnout

If you’re a full-time employee and a part-time student, you might have a tough time finding moments to relax. This is called “burnout,” and it makes life feel overwhelming at times.
