Meet One of NYC’s Most “Sought After” Estheticians: Atelier Esthetique Graduate Kristen May Lee

Getting recognized by New York Magazine has long been a sign of importance to culture in Manhattan and beyond. One of their most beloved features is their “Best of New York” section, highlighting the greatest things to find in the city as chosen by peers in a given field. In July of 2024, their list of the Best Facialists in New York included one of Atelier Esthetique’s own, Kristen May Lee.

“Though several aestheticians work at Tribeca clean-beauty boutique Onda, Kristen May Lee is particularly sought after,” wrote the article. “She’s known for intraoral massage, which delivers tension release and a sculpted jawline.”

We spoke to Kristen about this honor and how her career has evolved, learning all about the incredible work she’s done. We also talked about what comes next after such a high profile article, and how her beginnings at Atelier Esthetique launched her on this path..

How did you get interested in esthetics in the first place?

I loved skincare as far back as the age of 12. Grooming in general was always of great interest to me. I could see it was a growing industry about ten years ago. I didn’t quite know where I would end up, but knew I needed an esthetician license to really explore what I wanted to. I met Regina Manning, the head of admissions at Atelier Esthetique, and she really guided me through the process.

Tell us about your time at Atelier Esthetique. What were some of your favorite classes, best memories, etc.

My time at Atelier was spent with amazing teachers like Miss Janette VanZyl. I was a night student and took many advanced courses. I really wanted to graduate and get a good start in the industry.  Some of my best memories are from times spent with my good friend and classmate Mariam. Mariam co-owns the Karine Kazarian spa with her mother. We really gave each other great support then and after graduation.

When did you find out about your feature in New York Magazine? Were you approached in advance?

A beauty editor named Yasmin Gagné became interested in my work just by dropping by the spa for brow appointments. We started following each other on Instagram and engaging in intriguing conversations. I loved her articles and decided I had to invite her in to experience a few of my niche abilities. Months later, she was approached by NY Magazine to find about five facialists to be featured in their “Best of NY” feature.

What does this recognition mean for you?

I’ve gotten a few mentions before and have been quoted for articles, but this recognition has iconic attachments for me. I’ve read The Best Of section for years. Everyone in New York knows about New York Magazine. My bookings have just grown, specifically from that article. I cannot express my gratitude for this opportunity. I don’t work with a PR company, so getting the opportunity to be noticed on a grand scale comes from a very authentic place. I’m proud of that.

What’s next for you and your career?

While I have a strong and steady practice at ONDA Beauty in Tribeca, I’ve also been approached by outside vendors to do freelance Press facials. I’ve worked with Angela Caglia, Furtuna Skincare, Cecily Braden, and French Farmacie. I’ve also been invited to do a five-day residency out in the Hamptons in August.

I would just love more unique opportunities to come my way with time. It’s my fuel; it’s how I thrive and grow. One day, I’d really love to create and teach my own workshop at Atelier. I don’t know what the future holds. I just constantly put myself out there to invite unique opportunities.
