Find the Right Hair Removal for You: Laser, Waxing, and Electrolysis

Whether you’re looking to get a hair removal treatment or to work in hair removal yourself, there are plenty of options available. Currently, there are three main types of hair removal procedures that are common in esthetics spas across the country. Laser, waxing, and electrolysis are all forms that allow for longer-term hair removal that are as safe as they are popular.

At Atelier Esthetique Institute of Esthetics, we train future professionals in three of the most in-demand hair removal methods used in spas across the country: waxing, laser, and electrolysis. Each offers unique benefits depending on your goals, skin type, and desired results.

Why There Are Different Types of Hair Removal

If you’re trying to get rid of hair at the root and prevent it from growing back quickly, hair removal is your answer. The right option depends on factors like skin sensitivity, hair type, treatment area, and long-term goals.

  • Waxing delivers immediate results but requires maintenance
  • Laser reduces hair growth over time with repeated sessions
  • Electrolysis offers a more permanent solution, though it’s more time-intensive

Understanding these differences can help you choose the right treatment—or the right career path.

Below we break down the three main types of hair removal and how you can get certified.

Waxing: Fast, Effective, and In Demand

Likely the most popular kind of hair removal, waxing is great for removing hair at the root, using different types of waxes in order to get the proper results. Regardless of skin type, there is a waxing treatment for you. If you’re trying to get a cleaner removal than shaving alone, waxing is likely your preference.

For those interested in entering the field, waxing is also one of the most accessible entry points. Waxing can be performed by professionals who have successfully completed a 75-hour licensing course that trains candidates on both theoretical and practical skills.

Laser Hair Removal: Long-term Reduction

Laser hair removal is ideal for those seeking a long-term solution. Laser skin treatments, including IPL (intense pulsed light), can also be used to treat other conditions, including skin pigmentation and more. However, multiple laser treatments are often needed to achieve the best results.

Getting certified as a laser hair removal technician will involve a course that provides education in laser safety, theory, and treatment of hair removal. Note, however, that you can only get certified in hair removal if you’re already a licensed esthetician or if you have an equivalent level of certification in your selected field. Check out our NYS-approved 5-day course.

Electrolysis: Permanent Solution

Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method for permanent hair removal. This technique uses a fine probe and controlled electrical current to destroy the hair follicle at its root. This provides a more comprehensive and long-term solution that prevents future hair growth.

While New York State does not require a specific license for electrolysis, professional training is highly recommended. Our 120-hour program blends in-depth theory with practical experience to prepare you for real-world application.
