Annette Hanson, President of the Atelier Esthétique
, Warns of the
Dangers
of Waxing in Unsanitary Nail Salons on Good Day NY, Fox 5's Morning Show
New York, NY - February
3, 2003: Annette Hanson, Educator to NY's Secretary of State for
Skin, Hair and Nails, was recently interviewed on New York City's
Fox affiliate's morning program, Good Day NY. Ms. Hanson was asked
to educate the consumer with tips on what specifically to look for
in a salon when seeking waxing and nail services. Stressing that if
someone frequents unsanitary, unhygienic shops using unlicensed or
untrained individuals, they run the risk not only of getting
infections, abrasions, and burns but also easily transmitted
diseases such as hepatitis, herpes, HIV, ringworm, nail fungus, nail
mold, staph, strep and others. Ms. Hanson urged the public to demand
high standards, and well-trained technicians, two tenets firmly
adhered to at her Atelier Esthétique Institute of Esthetics. In the
state of New York, waxing cannot be performed by a
nail technician, but only by those individuals possessing a waxing,
esthetics or cosmetology license. The Fox story was motivated by New
York's Secretary of State's office undertaking an aggressive
"Appearance Enhancement Sweep" of all hair, skin and nail
salons. Among 483 nail salons inspected in 2003, 92 salons did not
have the proper business license and 183 were employing unlicensed
operators. Within minutes of Ms. Hanson's television appearance, viewers
quickly called in to report violations. For more information and
